Details

‘Plateelbakkerij De Distel’ (1895-1923)

Around 1910 the products of the Amsterdam based factory ‘De Distel’ (The Thistle) ranked in the very top echelon of Dutch pottery factories. Numerous buildings where decorated with Distel tiles and their vases and pottery adorned interiors all over the world. Four years after the founding they where already participating in national fairs and exhibitions. By 1911 new director J.M. Lob managed to attache several trend setting designers to the factory, such as Carel Adolph Lion Cachet 1864-1945), Jan Eissenloeffel (1876-1957) and Theo Nieuwenhuis (1866-1951). They made attactive and special designs for the factory.

In 1923 the independant existence of the ‘De Distel’ ended after they merged with Goedewaagen in Gouda. A factory that was specialized in clay pipes and decorative earthenware. Leaving their wonderful art work for the next generations.
