This beautiful and unique Delftware figurine of Peter the Evangelist dates from the first half of the 18th century.
The Apostle Peter, also known as Saint Peter, and Cephas - original name Simeon son of Jonah - was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. His life is prominently featured in the New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
The figurine is portraying Saint Peter in a sitting position. In one of his hands, the apostle is grasping the pair of keys to heaven and in the other hand, he holds open Bible. Saint Peter is depicted as a slightly balding, full-bearded patriarch. The Saint is draped in an iron red-colored robe. His eyes are gazing upward to the spiritual realm.
The figurine is set on the green painted base, the edges of the base are finished in red.
