Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg Den Haag (1883-1917)

Rozenburg was set up as a pottery factory in 1883 by the German Wilhelm Wolff Freiherr von Gudenberg. The entrepreneur’s original aim was to produce traditional Delft pottery, but he was soon captivated by contemporary artistic designs. In the 1890s, Rozenburg compromised between art and commerce, between ceramics for the construction industry and decorative pottery. Nine years later, Rozenburg attracted the international attention with their extreme thin and fragile ‘eierschaalporselein’ (egg shell porcelain). This special porcelain was so high in quality that musea immediately added them to the collection. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands also collected these remarkable porcelain items.

Wilhelm Wolff Freiherr found an ally in the eccentric T.A.C. Colenbrander (1841-1930), who designed exotic vases and dishes with whimsical, bright designs. His revolutionary designs drawn the attention of many art critics. Colenbranders’ use of his deep, warm color palette was mostly inspired by nature. Nowadays his designs are seen as the most influential to Dutch ceramic history. The factory was very much inspired by the British arts and crafts style. Vases, mantel clocks, dishes and jugs were decorated with idyllic shapes inspired by nature. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart (1862-1931) and W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). Many of the handpainted scenes were devised by these master painters and their apprentices. Inspiration and expertise were derived from field trips, the Hague art academy or volumes of illustrations from all over the world.

Those early days were a flamboyant time, but the factory struggled to make a profit. Colenbrander had a close relationship with the owner of the factory and tried to influence the production. Eventually his meddling went too far in the eyes of the shareholders and left Colenbrander with the choice of leaving the factory or stopping with sharing his ideas. Colenbrander decided to stop working for Rozenburg, left the factory and took his designs with him. Rozenburg was disorganized but that came to a change when in 1895 J. Juriaan Kok became owner of the factory. He was inspired by the upcoming Japonism which led to more colorful designs. The World’s fair Paris in 1900 had drawn the attention of museums and critics again. Rozenburg flourished and was able to add the ‘Royal’ title to its name. Although the factory sold a lot of items, from 1909 till 1917, Rozenburg encountered financial setbacks. The good quality of Rozenburg’s earthenware resulted in too much expenses in comparison to the revenues. In 1917 Rozenburg closed his doors, however still manages to influence the Dutch design of today.
