Corner Floors A ,corner floor, is a tile shaped like a quarter of an oval approximately 18 x 24 cm in size. It was used as a part of a ,smuiger, (a type of fireplace found in the province of North Holland, north of Amsterdam). It was positioned part of the way up at the junction of the chimney breast and the back wall see Jan Pluis The Dutch Tile Designs and Names 1570-1930 fig. 67 68 p. 63. In Zaanstreek, it is called a ,hoeksteentje, (corner tile). The curved edge, being visible, is painted whilst the straight edges are built into the wall and therefore left plain white glazed. The underside is normally plain with glazed (the two are not glazed) All the ,corner floors, known to us, were produced in Amsterdam in the first half of the 18th-century and are painted with a biblical scene, except the two corner floors you can see here, these are with a landscape scene.
