Polychrome tile (floor) with two warriors made by Makkum in approximately 1925. The kind of tiles were only made between 1920-1930 and were painted by Jan Romme Steensma. The tile size is 20 x 20 x 1.4 cm.

The term 'floor' indicates a square slab of natural stone or fired clay, for example Bremer. Floors also refers to natural stone slabs of Weser sandstone approximately 50 x 50 cm. The kiln book, wages and debtors ledgers of the Tichelaar factory speak of e.g. 20 duims vloeren(20 inch floors), meaning tiles approximately 20 x 20 square (wages ledger, 27-1-1866: 22 20 duims vloeren). Floors were painted with all kinds of designs, both ornamental and figurative.

With its rich and fascinating history of four centuries, Royal Tichelaar Makkum is the oldest business in the Netherlands. The factory was already in business before 1594. Ten generations of Tichelaar have now devoted their best efforts to the art of genuine Makkumer ceramics. The fact that the family name found its origin in that of the craft says more than enough. All the Makkum tiles you can see on our web shop are just examples. If you order a tile it will look almost exactly the same, it will always be a little bit different because all the Makkum tiles are handmade and of course also hand painted.
