The tiles were made by The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834 in Maastricht. First, he started a glass factory. Two years later production of pottery began. Pottery production was initially concentrated on so-called faience commune - simple pottery for a local market.
Ceramic floor tiles, such as those have been used in the Netherlands since 1880. They were already invented during the time of the industrial revolution. In the Netherlands, there are many special buildings in which the original tile floors are still part of the interior.
